autumn arrived yesterday

It finally felt like serious autumn yesterday. I woke up at 430 to a power outage which came back on around 6am. It was raining when I went downstairs, pulling my old flannel shirt close around me in the chilly house.
I opened the slider and stood in the door way listening to the rain patterning thru the leaves and smelling the wonderful freshness of it.
The rain kept up most of the day, much to the disgust of the dog who hates to get wet when she piddles. Much dithering under the patio, then a dash to what she perceives is a drier part of the soggy back yard, a quick squat, and zoom back into the house, to her pillow on the couch.
The rain didn't deter the patio birds much. I put seed out when I saw them in the trees and damp doves and bedraggled sparrows came swooping in for breakfast. Oddly, the feisty jays were dry. Wonder what their trick is.
I love rainy days and spent most of yesterday at home, bundled up a bit so I could have the slider open. It never got above 60 degrees and I often found myself just standing at the door, feeling like I was back in Michigan on a typical autumn day. It was wonderful.

OMG - where's my ark?

So this just happened over the last hour or so. There was only a 20% chance of rain today. It started raining, got harder, hailed, rained, rained, rained, and eventually flooded out the huge intersection in front of our store. Gorgeous double rainbow, the brightest main rainbow I've ever seen, all the way across the sky. Crazy, crazy hour of weather.

That little tree across the street? It's about 5 feet from the street curb.
The water has risen all the way past it.
Same on this side - water clear up to our parking lot.

About 12" of water in the middle of the street.

The curb and street is about 10 feet further out.
Under all the water is a sidewalk and 5 more feet of grass.

This is a normal intersection most of the time.
Today it's a lake.

June 4th... sort of

The calendar says so, but I think we've been transported back to March.
Or maybe Idaho.
Certainly not northern California on June 4th.

June first and I'm dressed in full winter gear - camisole, corduroy shirt, fleece vest, jeans, sneaks. And that's to work inside. When I go out, I add a jacket. This is the weirdest June first of my entire life.

When I was at Staples a couple hours ago, it rained just as I ran to the car. Rained pretty good, too. Usually we're done with rain by the end of March. Two years ago, I was in shorts by the middle of March.

Just loco.
